Woodside has a sense of simplicity and calming stillness. Intended to be a “back to nature” theme. The earthy simplicity and minimalistic elegance of the construction was a part of the requirements given to us by the family. A mid size two storey family dwelling on an 80x100 site. The design required adherence to the principles of ‘vaastu’ and followed strong “aaya” of 49’x57’. The design stacks twin residences for co- existing generations of a single family. The ground floor and part first floor is occupied by Dr.Ravishankar and family, where in the remaining first floor by his parents.
Twin houses are connected by a ground level verandah which becomes a shared common space for both the residences. The semi covered open spaces like the verandah surrounding the guest; living and dining room are to enjoy the exterior and interior interface. The predominant feature of the house being the connect between the verandah and the lush green garden. The garden is private, allowing the living spaces to look into it even as it blocks views of and from the neighbouring properties. The verandah also doubles up as an outdoor living room and allows the exterior to perform against the backdrop of the house. The 4 feet deepoverhangs of the verandah shelters the space from rains and harsh sunlight during the noon. These semi open spaces to become living spaces for most of the day has led to generous gardens in contrast to the intimate scale of interior
The house manages its spaces in a language that is simple and rustic with interiors being a combination of teak veneers and ‘sheesham’ wood furniture. The ground floor has the main living spaces and the private domain is on the “part” first floor. The interconnected seamless spaces evoke a feeling of a generous open plan. The large windows of guest room and living opens to a view of the garden.Tall French windows in the living room bring in transparency between the interiors and the lush, green interior landscape. Wooden louvers on the window let in ample natural light and ventilation into the spaces. Natural lighting and ventilation through the large opening has minimised the use of artificial illumination and air conditioning. The interiors are characterised by simple furniture, plain walls accentuated with colourful furnishings and artefacts, a single veneer finish, Italian finish vitrified flooring. The exterior and interior of the house present a similar expression of colour, accent and material. A Flight of wooden stairs leads to the first floor, with rather lavish landing areas. The landing areas double up as seating areas with views of gardens through large full length top hung wooden windows. A state of art home theatre room along with a bedroom forms the first floor. The remaining first floor accommodates the parent’s house with generous interiors. It’s moderately spaced one BHK with an extended foyer and a balcony.
Dense plants and foliage, landscape elements and the interplay of light and shade enhance the compositional effect to the structure in its setting. Rain water recharge, solar water heating and lighting importance to landscape is passive environmental strategies used in the scheme. Solar panels on the roof for water heating and lighting render the house energy efficient to a certain extent. All in all the’ Woodside’ residence, complete with its sloped roofing, open spaces, and minimalistic natural elegance is one of our best villa project.
